GE8291 CHAPTER2 ECOSYSTEM, TYPES OF ECOSYSTEM

ECOSYSTEM:
Ecosystem is a community of different species interacting with one another and with their non living environment exchanging
energy and matter.
we can also say ,a group of organisms interacting among themselves and with their environment is called as ecosystem.

The study of ecosystem is called as ECOLOGY.

BIOME:
The kind of organism which can live in a particular ecosystem depends on their physical and metabolic adaptation
to the environment of that place , biome is a small ecosystem within an ecosystem.

Types of Ecosystem:

Ecosystem is divided into:

* NATURAL ECOSYSTEM

* MAN-MADE ECOSYSTEM(ARTIFICIAL)

NATURAL ECOSYSTEM:

This ecosystem operates under natural conditions based on their habitat ( environment of the organism). It is divided into

*Terrestrial ecosystem:  Related to land and types of vegetation.

Eg:  Grassland Ecosystem, Forest Ecosystem,Desert Ecosystem etc.

*Aquatic ecosystem:

This ecosystem is related to water, it is classified into two types on the basis of salt content and they are as follows:

(i) Fresh water ecosystem:

*Running water ecosystem (LOTIC)

Eg: Rivers,Streams.

*Standing water ecosystem(LENTIC)

Eg: pond,lake.

(ii) Marine ecosystem:

Example for this type of ecosystem are Ocean, Estuarine etc.

MAN-MADE ECOSYSTEM:

It is also  called as Artificial Ecosystem, and it is maintained by Man.

Eg: Gardens, Croplands, Aquarium etc.
